Sexual addiction

Treatment programs for men struggling with addictive/compulsive sexual behaviours

My specialist field of work is sexual addiction and I am one of the few people within the UK who are trained to provide group as well as individual treatment programs.

Sexual addiction is still an often misunderstood condition although it’s estimated to affect up to 20% of the population.  It is best defined as an all consuming and destructive preoccupation with sexual activity.  That activity might be masturbation, pornography, going to sex cinemas and shows, visiting prostitutes, sleeping with strangers, having multiple affairs, cyber sex, pursing a fetish or even sexual offending behaviour. Neither the type of activity, nor the frequency defines an addict, but the relentless preoccupation with pursuing sex in spite of the damaging consequences the behaviour may be having on health, work, relationships and self esteem.

The goal of treatment is to help sufferers let go of unwanted addictive/compulsive behaviours and develop sexual behaviours of choice. This is achieved by developing a greater understanding of the addiction cycle and how problematic behaviours were first established. Using a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural techniques, you will develop an individual model for healthy relationships and sexual functioning as well as a relapse prevention plan.
